Dogs can overheat just like humans. As summer approaches it’s important to make sure your dog can cool off when the heat hits. It’s also important to be able to recognize the symptoms of heat-related illnesses in your dog. If see any of the listed symptoms make sure you get your pup inside and hydrated.
- heavy panting
- bright red tongue
- thick saliva
There are a variety of inexpensive, fun, and easy ways to keep your pup safe in the sun; from dog pools to cooling scarves, you can ensure your pup has a fun and relaxing time outside. Below you’ll find some of our favorite accessories that you can buy to keep your dog cool all summer long.
Frontpet Foldable Dog Pet Pool
Dog pools are a fun and easy way to keep your pup cool outside in the summer months. The FrontPet Pool is available in three sizes to ensure a comfortable fit for just about any pup. The small is only 8″ deep, and 32″ in diameter; the large is 12″ deep and 50″ in diameter, and you can even purchase an extra large with a diameter of 60″ for under $100. The pool is made with PVC to withstand your pup’s play and chewing and easily folds up when your dog’s done playing.
You’re also going to be happy to hear that the pool easily drains and is easily transported. The small weighs just 5 lbs, and the extra large only weighs 15 lbs. The only con to this pool is that its lightweight foldable design makes the bottom less sturdy. We suggest using the pool on grass as opposed to asphalt to prevent ripping.
Easyology Pet Cooling Mat
Cooling mats are an easy and inexpensive way to keep your pup safe and comfortable when the heat hits, both inside and outside. Unlike most cooling mats, the Easyology mat has extra thick and soft padding to appeal to your pup. The pad is also designed to fit on the top of a couch (27.6″ x 16.5″) if you need something easy to keep your pup cool inside. If you plan on using the pad outdoors, it can even be beneficial for pups who have minor allergies while they’re laying in the grass. The mat is filled with a cooling gel to help regulate your pup’s temperate, no freezing required. While the mat is durable, if your pup does manage to rip it open, the gel inside (while not good for your pup by any means), is non-toxic.
Ruffwear Cooling Vest
No matter what size your dog is, you can purchase a cooling vest that will help keep their body temperature at a comfortable level. The Ruffwear vests are available in sizes XXS to XL; they have convenient side buckles to allow you to easily take the vest on and off. The vest also has a reflective trim to help you keep an eye on your pup while they’re outside. The vest has the best technology out there to ensure your pup’s safety in the hot sun. It has 3 layers of evaporative cooling material; an outer layer that aids in evaporation, an inner absorbent layer that stores water for the evaporation, and an inner layer that transfer the cooling effect to your pup.
Bandanas are an extremely inexpensive and easy way to keep your pup cool while they’re active outside. The All For Paws Bandana costs less than $10, and is extremely easy to use; just soak the bandana in water and let it cool off your pup. The bandana is available in three comfortable sizes and is made with a non-toxic material. The bandana also stays secure with a 4″ velcro strap and is extremely lightweight which will help your pup adjust to it quickly. Considering its low price, the bandana is well worth the money; the only downside being that it doesn’t stay cool for more than a few hours.
Cool Pup Cooling Pet Bowl
If your pup spends a long time outside in the heat, the water in their bowl is going to get warm really quickly. Cooling water bowls will help keep your pup and their water cool all day. The cool pup bowl holds 16 ounces of water and is BPA free. The dimensions of the bowl are 8.6 x 8.4 x 1.2 inches. All you have to do is put the insert into the freezer over night and your pup will have refreshing water for those hot summer days. We love this bowl because it’s fairly inexpensive, safe for your pup, and stays cool all day.
Pro Select Crate Fan
Portable fans are a great way to keep your pup cool in the car, in their crates, or just around the house. They easily circulate warm air away from your pup and keep cool air flowing towards them. The Pro Select fan easily attaches to most cages and runs quietly as to not scare your pup while it’s running. The fan runs on batteries and weighs less than 1 lb making it easy to travel with. You can also buy non-toxic freezer inserts here that make the fan even cooler for your pup. They simply snap onto the front of the fan to provide up to two hours of extra cooling power. There are several cons to this model of fan. First, the batteries don’t last very long because they only run on 4C batteries. Also, while the fan runs very quietly to not disrupt your dog, this also means that it doesn’t run very hard which is why many people buy the additional cooling attachment. We would suggest this product for pet parents that need a convenient way to keep their pup comfortable for shorter periods of time.
My Dog Nose It Sun Protectant
Just like humans, dogs need some protection from the sun as summer approaches. The My Dog Nose It cream is a non-toxic and natural sun protectant for your pup. Unlike human sunscreen, it’s paraben free and safe to use on your pup’s nose. It will add moisture, block the sun’s rays, and heal your pup’s nose. Simply apply a thin layer to your pup’s nose before they go out in the sun for long periods of time. You can purchase the cream in either a .5 oz or 1 oz. packaging for an affordable price right from Amazon.
K&H Pet Cot
Elevated dog beds give dogs the comfort they’re used to, without overheating. They circulate air and some even absorb moisture to ensure your pup is comfortable in the hot weather. The K&H Cot is great for summer weather because of its water resistant fabric and non-slip feet. The breathable mesh used for the center of the cot also allows for your pup’s body heat to escape the bed and keeps the bed smelling cleaner as it repels mildew. The cot is available in 3 sizes, ranging from 32″ long to 50″ long, and is able to hold dogs up to 150lbs. Priced under $100, this cot is ideal for any pup parent that needs a bed that’s easy to set up and transport.
Hugs Pet Products Chillz Wrap Cooling Cloth
Cooling wraps are a great way to prevent your pup from overheating in the hot sun. All you have to do is run some cold water over the towel and you’ll have an easy way to keep your pup cool all day. We love this towel because it’s durable, long lasting, and even machine washable. You can easily tie it around your pup’s neck for a full day of cooling. The towel’s dimensions are 12 x 12.5 x 0.2 inches, perfect for nearly any sized pup.
Musher’s Secret Pet Paw Protection Wax
Dogs can have sensitive feet just like humans, especially in the summer, giving your pup a little protection from hot surfaces can make a big difference. For dogs who refuse to walk around with booties on, wax is a great alternative. This paw protection wax acts as an invisible boot to prevent burning, cracking, and drying. The wax even contains vitamin E to help old wounds heal, and prevent new ones from forming. We love Musher’s wax because it has a non-toxic, non-allergenic, non-staining formula.
Orbit 3-Arm Sprinkler
One of the easiest ways to keep your pup cool during the summer is with the use of a sprinkler. Not only will it keep your pup cool outside, it’ll benefit your lawn as well. Sprinklers will keep your pup exercising and having fun outside, and of course, they’ll be cooling off in the water while doing so. Obviously, just about any sprinkler will do; however, the Orbit Sprinkler is a great choice if you want to keep your grass watered and your pup cool at the same time. The water will spray out from it up to 24 feet in 3 various directions. It also twirls in a full circle to keep your pup engaged (and your lawn evenly watered). We also love this sprinkler because it is extremely affordable and is built to last a lifetime.
