Finding the right collar

Dog Collars

You can find dog collars that cater to just about every breed and behavioral issue. With so many types of dog collars, it can be hard to find the perfect fit for your pup. Your dog’s personality, size, and weight will all be factors to consider before purchasing a collar. If you purchase the wrong collar you can injure your pup and cause an unnecessary amount of discomfort.

Beyond the typical flat collar, there are a variety of training collars available to give you more control. However, even if your pup needs a special training collar, they should still have a flat collar. Find a collar that will give you the control you need and something your dog can feel comfortable wearing. The right collar, when used correctly, can make a tremendous difference in your dog’s behavior.

Training collars can give you far more control over your pup than traditional flat collars. They often put less strain on dogs’ tracheas and can prevent accidental neck injuries. No one collar is perfect for every breed it is therefore crucial to consider all variables before deciding on a collar; even if you purchase the right size and type of collar, you can still hurt your pup if you don’t know how to correctly use a training collar. If you run into any issues or confusion be sure to consult a trainer for help. With so many varieties it can be quite confusing to know where to start, but we’re here to help!

What's the best collar for my pup?

Do you have a smaller breed with a short nose? Breeds with short noses often develop problems with their tracheas and you must be careful not to pull too hard on their necks while you’re walking or training them. Harnesses may be right for your dog, in this case, they evenly distribute weight across your pup’s back and chest and don’t strain their necks. If your pup is going to be left alone or you fear they are going to accidentally choke themselves, you can give break-away collars a try. Break-away collars will release as soon as a specific amount of pressure is applied to the collar.

If you have a little escape artist on your hands, a martingale collar may fix all of your issues; they will prevent your pup from backing out of their collar without choking them. Last but not least, we suggest using head halters if your pup is constantly trying to pull away from you while you’re walking them. A head halter will gently pull your pup’s head back towards you if they begin to pull too far away. You can find out more about these collar’s below and then purchase Kai’s picks directly through Amazon.

Traditional Flat Collar

flat collar

Traditional flat collars made with nylon or leather are the cheapest solution and are available just about everywhere. If you have a well-behaved dog that you can control fairly easily, a traditional dog collar might be your best option; they’re inexpensive and simple. Keep in mind that flat collars aren’t designed to be training collars. They won’t deter bad behavior and will only restrain your dog and keep them close. Even if your pup needs a special training collar or harness, a flat collar will be a comfortable way to keep your pup’s ID on them when you don’t need the extra control provided by a training collar. There are far more varieties of flat collars than training collars so have fun with it! Find a collar that you and your pup can both get excited about.

For the Escape-Artist Pooch:

Martingale Collar

martingale

If your dog is constantly backing out of their collar and trying to escape, we have the perfect collar for you. Martingale Collars are a safe and comfortable alternative to the typical choke collar. Trainers use them because they give you more control over your dog without having to choke or pinch them. These collars were originally designed for dogs that have wider necks that can easily escape from their collars.

Martingale collars have two loops instead of one; they won’t tighten any smaller than the size of your dog’s neck. The collar will gently tighten around your pup’s neck if they try to remove the collar, and will otherwise rest loosely around their neck. Even when the collar tightens it doesn’t put enough pressure on your dog’s neck to cause any damage to their trachea. It tightens enough for your pup to notice, and loosen as soon as they stop pulling away.

Then change the fit by pulling the nylon through the slide. Wen you take your pup for a walk, the two metal rings should touch right behind your dog’s ears. We would highly suggest this collar for any dog owners having problems with their dogs backing out of collars. The Petsafe Martingale is a collar you can trust.

For Pullers:

Head Halter

head halter

Head halters are great as you begin to leash train your dog. If your dog is constantly trying to pull away from you, head halters can help control that behavior. If your dog pulls on the leash, the halter will pull their nose back toward you. Your dog will still be able to open their mouth and carry on with their normal behavior while wearing a head halter. You can expect your dog to resent the head halter at first, but most dogs will be able to get used to it fairly quickly. Distract them from the halter to help them relax and feel more comfortable wearing it. Don’t surprise your pup by jerking the leash or making sudden stops. Consistency is key as you begin to train them.

It’s best to have a trainer fit your dog so that the halter will fit comfortably, even with a perfect fit however it will take some getting used to. Even if your pup is uncomfortable with the halter at first, you will still see immediate results. Your dog physically won’t be able to pull you down the street if their nose is facing you. Head halters are a gentle and easy way to help control your dog.

For the Active Pooch:

Harness

Harnesses are a great alternative to flat collars and can give you more control than a collar. They will take pressure off of your pup’s neck and prevent you from accidentally choking your dog. They also don’t pull on your pup’s neck which makes them great for breeds with tracheal problems. Harnesses are also more effective at preventing your pup from jumping on people than a traditional collar. You can buy harnesses that either attaches to the front or back.  Usually, harnesses that attach in the front are better for larger dogs. Either way, you’ll get far more control over your pup than you would with a regular collar. Keep in mind that while it may be harder for a dog to back out of a harness than a collar, they’re not inescapable.

For the Safety Conscious Owner:

Break-Away Collar

break-away

Break-away collars are designed to prevent collar strangulation during emergency situations. They have two clips, one regular clip and one that will release when too much pressure is put on the collar. If you’re taking your dog for a walk, you can attach the leash to the breakaway clasp to prevent the collar from releasing. With a breakaway collar, you can get peace of mind knowing that your dog won’t injure themselves in an emergency. The pressure required to release the collar varies based on the size of the collar to ensure that the collar won’t release until a dangerous amount of pressure is applied.

collars to re-think:

slip collar

Slip collars can be dangerous for dogs, especially if you don’t know how to safely fit them. If you’re training any dog under 6 months, this is definitely not a safe collar for you to use. Unfortunately, slip collars are often used incorrectly and end up choking your dog.  Martingale collars are a much safer alternative to slip collars, and are easier to use. Slip/choke collars are only meant for training and should not be used as your dog’s regular collar. They’re incredibly hard to safely use and we suggest finding a safer alternative for training purposes.

Slip Collar

Pronged Collar

Pronged Collar

Of all the dog collar types, pronged collars are probably the most dangerous. They’re  meant to evenly distribute pressure along your dog’s neck instead of a harsh pull on one spot that occurs from most collars.  If you were to jerk your dog’s leash while they were wearing a pronged collar you could do severe damage to their trachea. If you have an aggressive dog, a puppy, or a shy dog, this is not the collar for your pup. Using a pronged collar correctly can be difficult for inexperienced dog owners; we suggest finding a safer collar alternative.
