A Word About Outward Hound:
Outward Hound is a trusted brand of nearly 25 years, who pride themselves on innovation. They create some of the most well known and widely recognizable interactive dog toys and games, innovative dog feeders, and outdoor travel gear for dogs on the market. They also produce higher quality toys such as the Outward Hound Invincibles Toys lineup. As a company who’s mission statement is centered around innovation, it only makes sense that they are the logical place to start when it comes your dog’s first interactive dog toy.
We have found that their toys hold up to even the toughest chewers, and their accessories are top notch. From life jackets to plush toys, to durable chew toys, Outward Hound is able to provide quality products at an affordable price. We love their toy lines because they’re great for both active and passive playing dogs. They’re durable enough to throw around in the backyard and soft enough to cuddle up with on the couch. No matter how rough your pup plays, Outward Hound will have a toy that your pup can get excited about.
hide a squirrel
The Hide-A-Squirrel plush toy is one of Outward Hound’s best selling items. This toy features a plush tree trunk paired with small stuffed squirrels for stimulating and interactive play. Your pup will have a blast pulling each plush squirrel out of the holes in the tree trunk, and playing with each squirrel individually. Ranging from size Junior to Ginormous, it’s easy to find the perfect size toy for your pup. This plush toy also comes in two other characters; Hide A Bee or Hide A Bird plush, so you and your pup can choose your favorite.
Each squirrel, bee, or bird includes a squeaker inside to further engage your dog. This can be troublesome for pups that like to destroy squeaker toys. Although, this toy will last longer than most, with up to six squeaker toy animals included. The Junior, Large, and Jumbo sizes of this toy include three plush squirrels and the Ginormous size includes six squirrels.
Is this toy right for my dog?
Hide-A-Squirrel is best for dogs that don’t have a strong instinct to rip apart squeaker toys, or plush toys. There are multiple seams on the trunk of the toy that are easily ripped by tough chewers. Multiple holes in the trunk are close together with only a small amount of fabric in between openings. Each plush animal is another toy to destroy and potentially make a mess with, although they are more durable than the tree trunk. The fur on top of their heads and the multiple tags attached to the toy can be cut off if you’d like to ensure that your pup won’t be tempted to rip the toys at these locations. Tough chewers and pullers will still try their best to destroy each one.
If your dog rips apart an animal with repeated use, you can purchase replacement squirrels, bees, and birds to continue the fun without having to purchase the entire toy. There are four sizes of the Hide-A-Squirrel, perfect for all dogs. The smallest size available is the Junior size which is 5″ L x 5″ W x 5″ H and the largest, or Ginormous size is 7″ L x 7″ W x 12″ H.
What makes it different from other toys?
The Hide-A-Squirrel toy is an interactive toy which is wonderful for developing pups. It teaches them puzzle solving skills and helps them to grow into the intelligent pup you know they are. Interactive toys are great for helping active dogs burn off energy and have lots of fun while doing it!
Outward Hound also makes replacement animals so your dog can continue to enjoy their toy, even if they love to destroy plushies. It’s more cost effective to buy these replacement animals than to re-purchase an entirely new toy.
Is the plush material safe?
Yes, the plush fabric used for these toys is non-toxic, safe, and machine washable. This way you and your dog can continue to enjoy the toy, without any stinky smells. Just make sure to keep an eye on your dog during play time so they don’t ingest any of the fabric or stuffing.
What about the mess?
This particular toy has more stuffing than average because of the multiple plush animals and tree trunk included. With any plush toy there is the potential for a mess to be made if your dog likes to rip stuffing and squeakers out of plush toys, which is part of their natural predatory instincts. The trunk of this toy also tends to shed with repeated use, but that’s to be expected. Unfortunately, it can be necessary to keep a vacuum on hand with any plush dog toy.
If your pup is keen on ingesting squeakers and stuffing, this toy could be dangerous. We suggest keeping an eye on your dog with any new toy, especially of the plush variety. If your dog is a chewer that spits out toy pieces instead of ingesting them, you wont need to worry too much. It’s still best to keep an eye on them while they use any squeaker toys. This will ensure that you and your pup are happy campers!
If your dog isn’t absolutely thrilled about this toy right away, try hiding treats inside of the toy or squeaking the animals to get your pup interested. If your dog loves a good game of fetch, the little animal plushies are perfect for tossing.
